A Big Announcement
We live in a day and age where people are always announcing their plans. Often, they do it in big ways, so as to be seen by the most amount of people and to receive the most attention. As we near Jesus’ arrival this Christmas, we recognize that Jesus’ approach was different. His big birth announcement was actually quite humble.
The Humble Arrival
Today, we reflect on how God humbled Himself to come to us in the most unexpected way.
Luke 2:4-7 (NIV)
“ So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”
Jesus’ birth story is one we’ve likely heard many times: He did not arrive in a palace surrounded by royalty, nor did He choose a life of comfort or financial stability. Instead, Jesus came to us in poverty, vulnerability, and humility. Born in a stable, with a feeding trough as His first bed, His entrance into the world was marked by simplicity and lowliness.
What does this tell us about God? It shows us that He was willing to set aside glory and majesty to be near to us. More than that, it reveals something profound about His character. Jesus Himself said, “I am gentle and lowly in heart.” Lowliness was not just His circumstance; it was His essence.
Making Room for Jesus
In our modern celebration of the season, it’s easy to get swept up in the pursuit of gifts, festive gatherings, and indulgent traditions. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying these things, Advent challenges us to keep sight of what Jesus values most.
His birth reminds us that true richness is found in humility and love, not in material abundance or worldly accolades.
