The Good News
The way we receive our news these days has changed drastically in the last few years. We no longer wait for the daily newspaper or nightly newscast. Instead, we know what’s happening in an instant, usually through social media or text alerts. As we prepare our hearts for Christ’s arrival this Christmas, let’s consider how the world receiving the news of his birth reshaped history and continues to transform lives.
Good News, Great Joy, Global Impact
Today we reflect on the news of Jesus’ birth, which is a pivotal moment with rich meaning.
Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
The angel’s message to the shepherds was news, not advice. It’s news about what God has done and is doing for us, and it encapsulates the essence of the gospel: “good news of great joy for all the people.” This news is joyful and hopeful and isn’t about a task for us to fulfill or a goal to achieve. This news is a gift to receive.
In receiving this news, we discover God’s joy, a joy that transcends circumstances and fills our hearts with lasting hope. The angel’s proclamation reminds us that the good news of Jesus isn’t limited to a select few. It’s global and it’s for everyone.
A Savior for All People
The inclusivity of Jesus’ arrival is striking. The angel first announced the news to shepherds, lowly figures in society. Later, wise men from distant lands came to worship Him. The Savior’s birth brought together people from all walks of life: Jews and Gentiles, rich and poor, men and women, young and old.
This global scope of Jesus’ mission reflects the heart of God, who desires that all people experience His love and redemption. The humble circumstances of Christ’s birth also remind us that God meets us in our ordinary, imperfect lives, offering salvation and hope.
Sharing the Good News
The angel’s proclamation compels us to consider how we might share this good news of great joy with others. Think about those around you, your friends, family, neighbors, even strangers.
